The Philippines have more than 100 different languages and dialects. The ten major tongues are Tagalog, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Ilokano, Waray, Tausog, Cebuano, Bikolano, Waray, Hiligaynon and Maguindanao. These languages are mainly of Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese, English and Spanish.
In December 1937, President Manuel Luis Quezon, the first president of the 'Philippine Commonwealth' proclaimed TAGALOG as the basis of the national language which was later named PILIPINO (1959) and then FILIPINO (1987). Today, he is remembered as the "Father of the Filipino Language". |
